Yuan is our group’s form of currency, received for submitting art/writing and participating in events. Yuan can be collected and used to “purchase” items, pets, mounts, skills, and privileges for your characters. Members are responsible for keeping track of their own yuan totals, as dA currently doesn’t have a widget that allows groups to do this easily. In the future we’ll try to put together an open spreadsheet that will allow us to keep track of everyone in one document, but until then we trust members to take care of it themselves.

Below is a breakdown of how much yuan you can earn per piece of artwork submitted. Please read carefully and ask if you have any questions regarding what category your artwork might fall into. We also ask that you keep track of how much yuan each piece of artwork receives in its comments section.

For Artwork

Sketches and Dumps
Non Color - 50 yuan per picture in dump

Shaded - 300 yuan

Add +100 yuan for every character added
Add +200 yuan for a detailed background

:bulletblue: For colored headshots of a character, give yourself +50 yuan.

Digital Painting
Speed Painting - 200 yuan
Character and Simple Background - 400 yuan
Full Image with Detailed Background - 600 yuan

Add +100 yuan for every character

:bulletblue: If your art is animated add +250 yuan to whatever your current yuan is.
:bulletblue:For collaborations, take whatever the total number of yuan is and split it evenly between the collaborators. For example, if the art comes out to 200 yuan, each member gets 100 yuan.

FOR WRITING

Any writing submitted must be in a traditional novel format (paragraph style) and edited for spelling and grammatical errors. We ask that all writing be the work of one author.

0-1,000 words – 50 yuan
1,000-3,000 words – 200 yuan
3,000+ words – 500 yuan

:bulletblue: At some point, we may set up a forum system outside of dA for members to RP in. If/when this happens, we’ll come up with a system for you to earn points through RP posts.

Extra

:bulletblue: Events, Mini Events, and Event Memes will be given a set amount of yuan by whatever moderator is in charge of the event. Yuan points will vary depending on the mod, but will usually be around 250 yuan. For a list of past events, click here: [link]

---

Please keep in mind that items in the shop ARE expensive, and if you want them you have to be active and work hard for it. We would love to see participation from everyone!

To the older members of the group: The amount of yuan you can receive per picture has increased. Please go through your gallery and change how much yuan each picture you’ve submitted is worth!

Below is a list of common questions we've received in the past about the group and OC characters accepted. Because we strive to stay in line with the Avatar universe's canon, there are restrictions we place on the characters submitted to the group. If you want to apply, we ask that you please respect our guidelines. They're in place to make RPing fair--and therefore, fun--for all. If you have a question that's not answered here, please don't hesitate to send us a note.

About the Group and Applying

1. What is Republic City? (the short version)

Republic City is a role play-themed group that will be following and directly correlated to the events and happenings of the show, The Legend of Korra animated series as it airs on Nickelodeon. If you haven't seen it, we highly recommend it--especially if you were a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, LoK's prequel.

2. Cool! I love that show. I'd like to join RC. Why can't I click the "Join our Group" button?

Republic City is a private RP group. We want to keep this a small, friendly, active community, and keeping our numbers relatively small ensures that. However, a few times a year we accept new members, so follow our journal for announcements.

3. How do I apply when RC is accepting applications?

You may visit our Applications journal for more details ([link]), but basically the process is this:
:bulletblue: When applications are open, you make a new character.
:bulletblue: You submit your character to us in a note.
:bulletblue: After the window for application submission has closed, the mods begin to review characters. This usually takes 1-2 weeks.
:bulletblue: If accepted, you will receive an invite from the group and, TA-DAH! You're a member of RC.

4. Okay, great. When will I know that you're accepting applications?

Unfortunately, there's no way to know when we're accepting applications unless you follow us and read our journals. We don't follow a specific set of dates; we just open the opportunity to apply when we feel like it. But when applications are open, we usually give people a month and a half to get them to us, with frequent reminders to do so.

About Characters
(general/non-benders)

1. Can my character be a descendant of an existing character?

No. Children of previous characters are already established and therefore we will honor that.

2. Can my character have a pet or a mount?

No, or at least, not to start with. Pets and mounts can, however, be “bought” with yuan, our group’s form of participation currency. This applies to EVERY pet, no grandfathering of pets will be allowed.

3. Can I be a non-bender?

Absolutely!

4. Can my character be part of the Equalist faction?

Again, absolutely! But your character cannot interact directly with Amon or the Lieutenant.

5. Can my character be a chi blocker?

Yes. Just don’t go crazy and godmod your way through an RP with benders.

6. Can I be an Air Acolyte?

Yes, but your character cannot interact directly with Tenzin or his family.

7. Can my character work for Hiroshi Sato?

Yes, but your character cannot interact directly with him or Asami.

About Characters
(benders)

1. What martial arts are the elemental benders using?

All of the bending techniques and poses are based off of real martial arts. Firebenders are similar to that of the Northern Shaolin kung fu style; waterbenders the Tai Chi Chuan (Yang style); and earthbenders the Hung Gar style kung fu.

2. Can I be an Airbender?

No. If you are a follower of the old season, you'd know that Aang was the last airbender to exist at the time. Only his children and their children are gifted with airbending and therefore, we will not make more characters to jeopardize that.

3. Can I be a metalbending policeman?

Yes, but your character cannot interact directly with Lin Bei Fong.

4. Can I energy bend?

No. That is a technique having only been seen used by the Avatar himself.

5. Can my firebender bend blue flames?

No. Research clearly states that Azula was the only one who could utilize them. Oh, and a dragon.
None of you are dragons.

6. Can I be a lightning bender?

No, or at least not to start out with. Lightning bending is a skill that can be "purchased" with yuan.

7. Can I have a metal bender?

Unless your character is part of the Police Force, no. However, like lightning bending you may "purchase" the ability to metal bend if your character is not a cop.

8. Can I have a blood bender?

No. It is a dark art that is frowned upon and there are only a few characters who have been able to achieve the necessary skill needed to perform it.

9. Can my character be part of an existing pro bending team/have a pro bending team?

Yes. But, like obtaining a pet, this is a privilege you must "purchase" with yuan. For more information about our Amateur Bending League, please see: [link]

Rules

Applications | Rules| F.A.Q. | Joining | Map | Shop

Below are the rules and conduct this club will follow, so be very sure to read them closely and keep them in mind during your time here! We want everyone to have a good time, and the rules are set to ensure that.

General Rules

These are the “common sense” rules. If broken, the mods will respond by issuing a warning. If broken again, it could result in removal from the group.

Be Respectful - If there are other members RPing in the chats and you would like to join, please ask them first. If you jump in, odds are you’re interrupting a plot the two may have planned or are trying to flesh out and well...that’s pretty rude, don’t you think?

No Bullying - As stated above, we’re all here to have fun. We get that drama happens and that’s just fine, but in no way do we want drama to escalate into something that could potentially be bullying. If we receive any reports of such things happening in the chatrooms, you can be sure we’ll investigate it and kick you out if you’re guilty of it. You will get absolutely no warnings on this. If you think you are being bullied, be sure to get a screencap of the situation as proof. There’s nothing we can do otherwise because there's no way to really resolve a "he-said-she-said" situation.

Stealing Art - You don't have to be the greatest artist in the world, but if we catch you tracing or copying you'll receive a warning. Trace again and we will have to remove you from the group. This includes drawing off of bases. Even though our group is based off of the Legend of Korra show, we would like all submitted artwork to be 100% original, hand-drawn or hand-written by the creator. However, if for any reason you end up using a reference or using a tutorial for your work, we expect you to give credit to the original artist. For a brief description of the difference between tracing, copying, and referencing, please check out #ArtisticAnimanga's journal: [link]

Adult Content - The Legend of Korra is a PG-13 cartoon and therefore, We'd like to keep the club like that as well. By all means if you wanna go do the horizontal mambo with another character, go ahead and do it privately and away from the club. The same goes for art content. While we won't discourage you from drawing such things, we ask that you please keep it in good taste. We reserve the right to decline or remove any pieces from our gallery that might make other members uncomfortable.

No Godmoding - What is god moding? Urban Dictionary summarizes it quite nicely: "'God Moding'" is in essence when someone's character has the ability to do practically anything without limits or boundaries. An example is when they simply cannot be harmed by any and all means any other RP-ers try." ([link]) While it's okay for your characters to be strong, have great stamina or exceptional skill when it comes to fighting/bending, we ask that they not be indestructible. For example, if your character falls off the roof of a building chances are they're going to break a leg or a rib or something. It's just irritating and not fair to the other people you're RPing with.

Another problem we see a lot is metagaming. You may know of things that happen outside the RP such as relationships and each other’s character histories, but that does not mean your character does. Unless your character(s) are told in a RP or your partner okays it, your character cannot know of anything that hasn’t happened or hasn’t been told. Also, please refrain from putting words in another character's mouth or moving somebody else's character for them. It's just poor RP etiquette.

Activity

Every two months we will be checking for activity within the club to be sure everyone who signed up is still interested in participating in RC. Now, we know that stuff in that pesky thing called real life can come up: school, work, relationships, health issues, etc that might prevent you from being as active as you'd like to be. We understand! "Activity" to us basically means that you just post a comment on a journal or the front page every once in a while, just to show that you're still interested. You may RP in private, but the mods have no way to check that kind of activity which is why we ask that you submit something or comment in the group.

Submission Guidelines and Yuan

Before we touch on this subject, the club STRONGLY recommends that members make a folder titled “Republic City” in their own galleries for the sake of convenience. If we (or other members) cannot find art in your galleries then it will be hard to tell if you're even active.

Yuan - For submitting artwork, members will earn yuan, our group's form of participation points. The more complicated or detailed the picture, the more yuan is received. Yuan can be collected and exchanged for special group privileges such as new characters, pets, mounts, skills, etc. Once enough yuan is collected, members must contact the group with the amount of yuan they have and what they would like to "purchase." You must do this before you can update your character's application or start RPing with the special privileges you wish to purchase. A mod will go through your gallery to verify that the amount you claim to have is true. For more information, see the full journal about Yuan and Participation in Republic City: [link]

Quality - While we will accept traditional artwork, we ask that unless the art is 3D (jewelry, sculptures, cosplay, etc.) it be properly scanned. Artwork submitted as a photo will not be accepted, as quality is usually poor.

Non-Member Artwork - We've created a folder specifically for non-member RC related artwork. If you've purchased a commission of your character, participated in an art trade, or received fanart, let us know! We'll request that the piece be added to our gallery. The only rule is that the artwork must be of a current character in Republic City.

Other

If you have a suggestion, please take it up privately with the group through a note. Not that we don't want anyone else to read your suggestion, but this is just to ensure that those not familiar with the group or still getting used to the rules aren't confused about what is and what isn't.

Applications

Republic City

Republic City is an RP-themed group that will be following and directly correlated to the events and happenings of The Legend of Korra as it airs on Nickelodeon. Characters that join the club will be living out their everyday lives within the walls of Republic City as the world around them is shaped and molded to the decisions of Avatar Korra.

During interval periods in which the seasons pause for production, this club will have events related but not necessarily pertaining to the actual plot. Yuan, our group's form of participation currency, will be awarded to those who submit artwork or writings to our group's gallery. For more information on earning yuan, please read our journal on yuan: [link]

Applying

Republic City is a private RP group. We want to keep this a small, friendly, active community, and keeping our numbers relatively low ensures that. However, a few times a year we accept new members. The application process looks something like this:

:bulletblue: When applications are open, you make a new character and upload your filled out application sheet to your dA gallery.
:bulletblue: Send us a note with a link to your character in it.
:bulletblue: After the window for application submission has closed, the mods will begin to review characters. This usually takes 1-2 weeks.
:bulletblue: If accepted, you will receive an invite from the group and, TA-DAH! You're a member of RC.

Follow our journals to know when we're accepting applications for new members.

Application Guidelines

Those who wish to apply must fill out our application sheet. We will be looking for candidates with moderate artistic and writing skills.

Please note: there are application sheets available for fire, water, earth and non benders. There are no airbender apps, because according to Legend of Korra canon, there are no airbenders left beyond Tenzin and his family. All application templates can be found in our Resources folder: [link]

:bulletblue: In your drawn application, we would like to see at LEAST 70% of your character's body,  though a full body reference is preferred.

:bulletblue: Tracing, direct copying, or use of bases is not allowed. We want to see YOUR artwork, not somebody else's. If we suspect you of any one of these things, chances are you will be rejected.

:bulletblue: While traditional work is accepted, we require the use of a scanner. Sorry, but photos don't usually produce the best quality and we want to be able to actually see your character.

Please fill in the form below and include it in the description of your character sheet. If you are confused about what to include, browse our citizen galleries for examples.

Name:

Age:

Nationality:

Skills: (You must have three skills.)

Personality: (No mary sues/gary stus. Try to make your character as realistic to the Korra universe and canon as possible.)

Likes and Dislikes:

History: (This is optional, but highly recommended. It would be nice to know the character and to know what has brought them to Republic City if they weren't already living there pre-season 1.)

RP sample: (At least a paragraph written in paragraph form to show us your abilities and how you write. A school standard paragraph is 5-7 sentences long and we will be adhering to that standard.)

Additional Info: (Anything else you'd like to tell us about your character!)

Some Things to Consider when Creating your OC

DESIGN
Not that we want to stifle your creativity, but try to create a character that looks like they belong in the avatar universe. So please, no cat ears, crazy colored eyes, pink hair (unless your character dyes it on a regular basis--but you should explain that), etc.

PROFESSION
:iconniladhevan: went through the trouble of creating a chart of the common professions in RC, and right now the most common professions are:

Mechanic related
Tea shop related
Medicine related
Street performer

Try to give your character a job that is unique to RC! There will be more chances to participate in interesting RPs if your character is one of the few (if not the only one) working in that particular area. So get creative! For a complete list of the current professions in RC, check out Nil’s nifty chart: [link]

Please note that your character cannot take on a job or skill that might potentially endanger the plot to the original series. Meaning, no things like councilmen, or someone 'incredibly powerful and influential', etc.

Putting a character on the incorrect sheet or failing to completely fill out the required information will lead to the rejection of your app, so please double check everything before you send it to us!
